This 4-unit package is drawn from the nationally recognised CPC60220 Advanced Diploma of Building and Construction (Management). It is built for one thing: the technical qualification for the QBCC Open Class Site Supervisor licence in Queensland. The full Advanced Diploma runs to 10 units. QBCC lists 4 of them against open-class site supervision, and those 4 are the whole course.
Open class is the top of the QBCC ladder. The licence lets you supervise building work on all building classes, 1 to 10, in all construction types, A, B and C, with no height limit. That means the projects the lower classes cannot touch: high-rise residential towers, CBD office buildings, hospitals, hotels, shopping centres, school and university campuses and large industrial facilities. A low-rise licence stops at Type C buildings of 2,000m². A medium-rise licence stops at 3 storeys and cannot cover Type A construction on classes 4 to 9 buildings. Open class has no ceiling.
Day to day, an open-class site supervisor is an employee. You supervise the work under your employer's QBCC contractor licence rather than contracting with clients yourself. On a tower that is a different job from a house site: Type A fire-resisting construction, structural systems carried over many storeys, crane and hoist programmes, services risers and a defects process that runs floor by floor. The 4 units are chosen for that environment. Codes and standards for large buildings, structural principles for high-rise and complex buildings, assessing construction faults in large projects, and managing a contractor's legal obligations.
Completing the 4 units gives you the technical qualification for the licence application. The Site Supervisor licence has no minimum experience requirement, so the units are the substantive step. Because you supervise rather than contract, the financial and insurance requirements that attach to a Builder Contractor licence do not apply to you. Delivery is 100% online and self-paced, built for supervisors who are already on a major project and cannot leave it to study.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) involves an assessor reviewing your current skills and evidence against the units in the Open Class Site Supervisor (QLD). You may need further evidence or gap training. Experience alone does not establish competency, and no fixed reduction in study time is guaranteed.
To achieve the Open Class Site Supervisor qualification requirements, students must complete 4 units of competency—all focused on large building supervision:
Experienced Queensland supervisors ready to move onto towers, major commercial and institutional projects, where a low-rise or medium-rise licence no longer covers the work.
Current site supervisors whose employer has won a Type A or high-rise project that sits outside their existing class.
Carpenters, bricklayers and blocklayers with years on multi-storey sites who want their supervisory role recognised at the top class.
Foremen and site managers already running floors on high-rise or major commercial jobs who need the licence to match.
Diploma holders employed by larger builders who want open-class supervision credentials under the employer's licence.
Supervisors with 4+ years on large projects who want the top QBCC site supervisor class on paper.
The Advanced Diploma of Building and Construction Management is for those ready to move into high-rise and open-level building. Whether you're aiming for a site manager role on high-rise projects or working towards an open builder's licence for Type A and Type B construction, this qualification gives you the theory, practical understanding, and on-site experience to get there.
The Open Class Site Supervisor qualification opens senior supervisory roles on Queensland's largest projects. CBD commercial towers, high-rise residential, hospitals and major institutional builds all sit inside the class.
